Questions to Ask Before Marriage

  Even before the big question of 'Will you marry me?' is asked, there are questions you should ask yourself before getting engaged, in order to deal with any issues there are before there is a ring on your finger.

YOURSELF
  • Do I love this person? As obvious as it may seem, you need to be sure it's love and not lust that you have for this person.
  • Are they the right age? Someone who has planned a more single life or wants to experience more things before they get hitched may want to hold off on engagement for a while.
  • Am I ready for commitment? Can you offer yourself fully and commit to this one person for the rest of your life?
FINANCES
  • Do we have debts and will they be paid off?
  • What are our spending habits and can we afford our lifestyle?
  • How much savings do we have?
  • If one of us loses our job, can we afford to live?
  • What is our earning potential for the future?
FAMILY
  • How close are we to parents? Will there be visits and marital advice from them?
  • Do we want children?
  • What are our parenting beliefs about discipline, schooling, etc?
  • Will one of us be a stay at home parent, and if so, who?
CAREER
  • What career paths are we on?
  • Does one of us want to change career paths and how will we adjust to that?
  • Does one of us want more education or qualifications?
RELIGION
  • what are our faiths and are they compatible?
  • If we marry, how will we handle it if have different faiths?
  • If we have children, which faith will they be brought up to follow?
HOME
  • Where do we want to live?
  • How will we divide household chores?
  • Where do we see ourselves living in 10 years time?
